Yet most profile defects we trace back at Believe Industry do not start at the roll former. They start at the coil. A strip with burrs, camber, or width variation will fight the machine all the way down the line.

That is where coil slitting comes in. It is the step between the steel mill and your roll forming machine, and it decides whether your material runs clean or runs you into scrap.

This guide explains what coil slitting is, how a slitting line works, and the five material prep facts that matter most for roll forming accuracy.

What Is Coil Slitting?

Coil slitting is a metal cutting process that slices a wide master coil lengthwise into multiple narrower strips, called mults, using rotary slitter knives. The strips are rewound into separate coils, each cut to the exact width a downstream machine needs.

Steel mills produce master coils in standard widths, usually 1000mm to 2000mm, weighing 10 to 30 tonnes. Almost no roll forming machine wants that width. A cz mesin pembentuk roll purlin might need 200mm strip. A cable tray line might need 400mm. Slitting bridges that gap.

One pass through a slitting line can cut a single 1250mm master coil into 20 or more strips in one run. That is the whole point. You buy steel by the tonne at mill widths, then slit it into the precise widths your profiles demand. You can read the general process background on Wikipedia’s roll slitting page.

Coil preparation is not a side job. It is the first quality gate for the entire proses membentuk gulungan.

How a Coil Slitting Line Works

Satu piawaian garisan belahan gegelung runs steel through six stations in sequence. Here is what happens at each one.

Entry and uncoiling. The master coil loads onto a mandrel, the outer wraps are peeled and fed into pinch rolls. A well-built uncoiler holds the coil centered and releases material at a steady rate. Misalignment here creates camber in every strip downstream.

Loop and feeding. A loop pit or accumulator decouples the uncoiler speed from the slitter head speed. The strip enters the knives flat and tension-free. On lines that also correct shape, a leveler flattens coil memory before the cut.

The slitter head. This is the heart of the machine. Paired circular knives, an upper and a lower for each cut line, shear the strip as it passes between them. Rubber stripper rings hold the strip flat and push the finished strips apart so they do not ride over each other.

Scrap winding. The two trimmed edge strands wind onto scrap winders. Typical trim is 3mm to 8mm per side, depending on edge quality requirements and mill edge condition.

Tension and separation. A tension stand or drag pad grips each strip so the recoiler winds it tight. The slitter knives separate the mults; the tension station keeps them separated.

Recoiling. Each strip rewinds onto its own mandrel, separated by fingers or separators, ready for shipment or for the roll forming line.

Modern light gauge lines run at 150 to 250 meters per minute. The slitter head does not slow down for more strips. It slows down for thicker material, which is why gauge class matters when you specify a line.

Slitter Knife Setup: Clearance Decides Everything

The single biggest factor in slit edge quality is the clearance between the upper and lower slitter knife. Too tight, and the knives wear fast and burnish the edge instead of cutting it. Too open, and the strip tears instead of shearing, leaving heavy burr and edge stretch.

The starting rule of thumb is 8 to 10 percent of material thickness, split between the two knife sets. Setup technicians then adjust by watching the burr. These starting values work for mild steel:

Ketebalan Bahan

Starting Clearance (per side)

Expected Burr

0.3 to 0.5mm

0.03 to 0.05mm

Under 0.03mm

0.6 to 1.0mm

0.05 to 0.10mm

Under 0.05mm

1.1 to 2.0mm

0.10 to 0.18mm

Under 0.10mm

2.1 to 3.0mm

0.18 to 0.28mm

Under 0.15mm

3.1 to 6.0mm

0.28 to 0.50mm

Under 0.25mm

Knife setup also includes overlap and cant. Overlap is how deep the knife circles mesh vertically. Cant angles the knives slightly so the cut opens behind the blade, reducing drag on the strip. Both settings shift with thickness and material grade. High-strength steel and stainless need different values than mild steel.

Harder material needs more clearance. Softer, gummy material like some aluminum grades needs less. When a line cuts multiple grades, the setup sheet for each grade matters as much as the knives themselves. Setup technicians at Pembuat publish practical guidance on this if you want depth beyond the tables here.

Why Slit Edge Quality Matters for Roll Forming

Roll forming bends the strip edges more than any other part of the profile. Legs, returns, and hemmed edges all start as slit edge. If that edge carries a burr or is work-hardened from a bad cut, the profile shows it.

Burr is the first problem. A burr is a thin roll of metal squeezed out at the cut line. On a roll formed profile, a heavy burr cracks when the edge bends. On prepainted coil, burr drags through the tooling and scratches the coating. Burr also packs into roll gaps and accelerates tooling wear across the whole talian mesin membentuk roll.

Camber is the second problem. Camber is the sideways curve of a strip measured over its length. If the slit strip arcs left or right, the mesin membentuk gulungan pulls it straight by force. That fight shows up as twist in the finished profile, wavy legs, and inconsistent leg heights along the length.

Edge wave is the third. Strips cut with excessive clearance stretch at the edge instead of shearing cleanly. The stretched edge is longer than the center of the strip, so it buckles into waves. Edge wave feeds directly into profile wave on the exit side.

This is why experienced buyers specify edge quality on their slit coil orders, not just width and thickness. An edge that looks acceptable in coil form can fail on the machine.

Slitting Tolerances You Should Specify

Width tolerance on slit strip depends on material thickness. Thinner material shears cleaner and holds tighter tolerances. These values reflect what well-maintained slitting lines deliver in practice:

Ketebalan Bahan

Toleransi Lebar

Camber (per 2m of strip)

Burr Limit

0.2 to 1.0mm

plus or minus 0.10mm

1.0mm

5 percent of thickness

1.0 to 2.0mm

plus or minus 0.13mm

1.5mm

5 percent of thickness

2.0 to 3.0mm

plus or minus 0.15mm

2.0mm

8 percent of thickness

3.0 to 6.0mm

plus or minus 0.20mm

2.5mm

10 percent of thickness

For comparison, general flat-rolled requirements for hot and cold rolled steel fall under ASTM A568/A568M. Precision roll forming work often demands tighter than standard values, which is a conversation to have with your slitting source before you order.

Compare this with dipotong kepada garis panjang work, where length tolerance drives the spec. In coil slitting, width, camber, and burr drive it. Write all three into your coil purchase spec.

Light, Medium, and Heavy Gauge Slitting Lines

Coil slitting lines are classed by the material thickness they handle. Buying the wrong class for your product mix wastes money in both directions: too light a line breaks down, too heavy a line costs more than the job needs.

Line Class

Julat Ketebalan

Kelajuan Talian

Max Strips

Typical Products

Light gauge

0.1 to 2.0mm

150 to 250 m/min

30+

Roofing, purlins, strut channel, cable tray

Medium gauge

1.5 to 4.0mm

80 to 150 m/min

20

Rack uprights, structural purlins

Heavy gauge

3.0 to 12.0mm

30 to 60 m/min

10

Thick structural sections, plate strip

A garis celah tolok cahaya covers most roll forming feed stock, since roofing, wall panel, purlin, and strut material sits between 0.3mm and 3.0mm. You send the spec, they cut the master coil, you receive mults ready to run. No capital, no setup crew, no knife inventory.

The math changes as volume grows. Toll slitting bills you per cut, per setup, and per tonne. Once your monthly tonnage justifies two or three fixed widths, the payback on your own line shortens fast. Lines like the decoiler options we describe here pair directly with in-house slitting for full material control.

In-house slitting also buys responsiveness. Change a strip width in an afternoon instead of waiting a week for a processor slot. For job shops running custom roll forming profiles with frequent width changes, that agility is worth real money.

Our honest advice: below roughly 500 tonnes per month of a stable width mix, use a toll processor. Above it, run the numbers on your own line. The crossover point moves with local labor cost and steel logistics, so model your own case rather than copying someone else’s.

What Drives Coil Slitting Cost

Four factors dominate coil slitting cost.
