Need A Gutter Or Downspout Profile We Do Not List?

Send one drawing: the profile section, the coil you will run and the outlet layout. We will come back with a configuration, a cycle time and a price range.

What a gutter and downspout line actually does

A gutter system is a water path. The gutter collects at the roof edge, the downspout carries the water down the wall, and the elbows join the two at the top and turn the run out at the shoe. Every machine on this page forms part of that path from flat coil, in one continuous pass, without heat or welding.

There are two forming families here. Gutters are open channels: a pan, a face and one or two return flanges. Downspouts are closed tubes: rectangular or round, seamed along the length. They are sold as a set because a gutter outlet that does not match the downpipe size is a leak waiting for the first storm.

Gutter profiles: K-style, half round and industrial

K-style is the default in North America. It has a flat pan, an ogee shaped face and two return flanges, and it is what most roofing suppliers stock in 5 inch and 6 inch. Our gutter line covers both sizes on one base.

Half round is the older shape and still the specified profile on heritage and architectural work. It is available in 6 inch, and it needs a different hanger system from K-style, so the machine is ordered together with the hanger decision rather than after it.

Industrial gutter goes to 7 inch for large catchment areas: warehouses, canopies, long shed roofs. The extra width is not cosmetic. A 7 inch channel carries roughly 40 percent more cross section than a 6 inch at the same water depth, which is what lets a long roof run to a single outlet.

Material matters as much as shape. Aluminum, galvanized steel, color coated steel and copper all form on the same stands, but they do not behave the same way. Copper work hardens and needs gentler pass schedules, and pre painted coil needs roll surfaces that will not mark the finish.

Downspouts and elbows: the vertical run

Downpipes come in rectangular sections such as 2 by 3 inch and 3 by 4 inch, and in round sections of 3 inch and 4 inch. The forming is a tube with a lock seam, which is a different operation from an open gutter channel: the strip closes on itself and the seam has to hold through the cut off.

The elbow machine is the part buyers forget. Every downspout run needs at least two elbows: one at the gutter outlet and one at the bottom to kick the water away from the foundation. Buying elbows from a third party means a colour mismatch on every job, which is why we quote the downpipe line and the elbow machine as one package.

Coil for this family is normally 0.4 to 0.8 mm. Going heavier than that on a portable machine is possible but it costs forming speed, and it puts the seam under load it was not designed for.

Portable lines, fixed lines and the hanging gutter

A portable gutter machine is a contractor tool. It travels on a trailer, forms on site, and delivers a seamless run in the length the building needs. The trade off is speed and coil size: one operator, one coil at a time, and a narrower size range.

A fixed line sits in a plant. It runs faster, takes larger coils, and can be paired with a run out table and a stacker. If you sell to installers rather than to homeowners, this is normally the better buy, because your output is measured in shifts rather than in jobs.

The hydroponic hanging gutter is the odd one in this family. It is not a rainwater product at all: it is a growing channel suspended above the crop, carrying a recirculating nutrient solution. It is here because the forming principle is identical, and because growers buy it from the same suppliers who build gutter lines.

Specifications at a glance

Figures are typical for this product family. Final values are confirmed against your profile drawing before order.
Profile Size range Coil thickness Notable
K-style gutter 5 in and 6 in 0.4 - 0.8 mm Flat pan, ogee face, two return flanges
Half round gutter 6 in 0.4 - 0.8 mm Heritage and architectural roofs
Industrial gutter 7 in 0.4 - 0.8 mm Large catchment areas, long roof runs
Downspout rectangular or round 0.4 - 0.8 mm Lock seam tube, supplied with elbow machine
Hydroponic hanging gutter per drawing per drawing Growing channel, not a rainwater product

How to specify a gutter or downspout line

Four answers decide most of the quotation. First, the profile drawing, including the seam or lock geometry, because that decides the stand count. Second, the material and the coating you will actually buy: bare aluminum, galvanized or pre painted steel and copper each need a different roll finish. Third, the outlet layout, meaning how many downspouts per run and what size they are, because the gutter and the downpipe have to be quoted together. Fourth, whether the machine travels or stays put, because a portable line and a fixed line at the same profile width are different machines.

If you are still comparing forming methods, our guide to choosing, operating and maintaining a roll forming machine covers the same decisions from a wider angle. For coil purchasing, the metal coil calculator works out how many metres a coil will yield before you commit to a tonnage.

Frequently asked questions

What is a gutter roll forming machine?
A gutter roll forming machine turns flat metal coil into a finished gutter section in one continuous pass: the coil is uncoiled, formed through a series of roll stands, and cut to the length the building needs. The same machine base can usually run more than one profile, for example 5 inch and 6 inch K-style, by changing or adjusting the roll set.
Can one machine make both 5 inch and 6 inch K-style gutter?
Yes, and that is the usual configuration. The pan and the face geometry scale with the size, so the machine is built with the larger size as the reference and the smaller one as the second setting. What changes between them is the roll spacing and the cut off, not the whole roll set, which keeps the changeover inside a shift.
Do I need a separate elbow machine for downspouts?
You need an elbow capability, not necessarily a second full line. Every downspout run has at least two elbows, one at the gutter outlet and one at the shoe, so the elbows are a consumable on every job. We normally quote the downpipe line and the elbow machine together, because sourcing elbows elsewhere means a colour mismatch on the finished wall.
What coil thickness do gutter lines run?
Most gutter and downspout work runs 0.4 to 0.8 mm coil. Thinner material forms easily but dents on the roof, and heavier material slows the line and loads the lock seam. The number to confirm is the thickness your market actually specifies, not the widest range the machine can physically pass.
Portable or fixed line, which should I buy?
If you install gutters, buy portable: the machine travels to the job and delivers a seamless run in the exact length needed. If you manufacture for installers, buy fixed: it runs faster, takes larger coils and can be paired with a run out table. The profile is the same; the economics are not.
What is a hydroponic hanging gutter roll former?
It forms the suspended growing channel used in hydroponic systems, where the channel carries a recirculating nutrient solution rather than rainwater. It is grouped with gutter machines because the forming principle is identical, but the profile, the drainage slots and the suspension points are designed around the crop, not around a roof.
What do you need to quote a gutter or downspout line?
A profile drawing with the seam geometry, the material and coating you intend to buy, the gutter sizes you need to cover, the downspout size and outlet layout, and whether the machine travels or stays in a plant. With those five items we can propose a configuration, estimate cycle time and give a price range instead of a catalogue number.
