Choosing the wrong steel coil is the most expensive mistake in a roll forming plant. The steel coil is typically 60 to 70% of the finished profile cost. Pick the wrong grade and the profile fails under load. Pick the wrong coating and rust appears within a year. Pick the wrong thickness and the machine setup has to change.
How to select steel coil for roll forming comes down to six decisions. Steel grade. Coating type. Coating weight. Thickness. Coil width. Surface condition. Each maps to a standard, a number, and a machine setting. This guide covers all six with the specs used in North America, Europe, Australia, and the Middle East.
Believe Industry Company has built roll forming lines for over 15 years and shipped machines to 20+ countries. We have watched buyers lose tens of thousands of dollars on coil spec errors. This is the checklist we hand our own engineers.
Steel coil selection is the process of choosing the coil’s steel grade, coating type, coating weight, thickness, and width so the finished profile meets its structural and corrosion requirements at the lowest material cost.
The order matters. Grade first, because it fixes strength and formability. Coating second, because it fixes service life. Thickness and width last, because they fix machine configuration and material yield. A линия профилегибочной машины built for one coil spec cannot simply run another. The steel coil spec is the contract between the material supplier, the machine builder, and the profile buyer.
The steel grade sets yield strength, formability, and weldability. Roll forming suits high-yield steel because the process bends rather than stretches, so you get more strength per millimeter than stamping. Most steel coil sold for roll forming is coated, and the grade and coating usually come from the same standard.
ASTM A653 covers hot-dip galvanized and galvannealed sheet in North America. Grades read CS Type A/B/C for commercial steel, FS for forming, DDS for drawing, and SS Grade 40/50/80 for structural. SS Grade 40 means 275 MPa minimum yield, SS Grade 50 means 345 MPa, SS Grade 80 means 550 MPa. ASTM International holds the full tables.
EN 10346 covers continuously hot-dip coated steel in Europe and much of Asia. Forming grades are DX51D to DX54D. Structural grades are S250GD, S350GD, S450GD, S550GD, where the number is minimum yield strength in MPa. CEN publishes EN 10346.
| Grade family | ASTM A653 | EN 10346 | Typical use |
|---|---|---|---|
| Коммерческий | CS Type A/B/C | DX51D | Roofing, cladding, gutters |
| Формирование | FS, DDS | DX52D, DX53D | Deep profiles, tight bends |
| Structural 250-350 | SS Grade 33/40 | S250GD, S350GD | Purlins, strut channel, racking |
| Structural 450+ | SS Grade 55/80 | S450GD, S550GD | High-load racking, heavy purlins |
| Drawing | DDS, EDDS | DX54D | Complex multi-bend sections |
Other markets add their own standards. Japan and Korea use JIS G3302 (SGCC, SGC440). Australia uses AS 1397 (G250, G300, G550). The высокопрочная сталь, прокатная гибка guide covers what changes when you move from 250 MPa to 550 MPa coil.
Rule of thumb: DX51D or CS Type B for roofing and light cladding. S350GD or SS Grade 50 for purlins and strut channel. S450GD or SS Grade 80 for racking uprights. If a leg bends tighter than 1x material thickness, move one step up in the forming grade family.
The coating decides how long the profile survives outdoors. Four families dominate roll forming steel coil.
GI is hot-dip galvanized, pure zinc. Cheap, proven, the default for indoor profiles and general roofing. GA is galvannealed, an alloyed zinc coating that paints and welds better but protects edges less.
GL, also called AZ or galvalume, is roughly 55% aluminum, 43.4% zinc, and 1.6% silicon. It gives two to four times the corrosion life of GI at the same coating weight and is the base for COLORBOND and ZINCALUME in Australia. ZM is zinc-aluminum-magnesium. It protects cut edges better than GI at lower coating weight, which makes it popular for coastal and industrial roofing.
Pre-painted coil adds a paint system at the mill, PPGI on a GI base and PPGL on a GL base. It removes the painting step from your plant but demands careful конструкция профилегибочной машины so the rollers do not scratch the film.
| Покрытие | Base | Edge protection | Best use | Расходы |
|---|---|---|---|---|
| GI (zinc) | Zinc | Умеренный | Indoor profiles, low-cost roofing | Самый низкий |
| GA (galvannealed) | Zinc-iron alloy | Низкий | Paint adhesion, welding | Низкий |
| GL / AZ (galvalume) | 55% Al-Zn | Высокий | Coastal roofing, wall panels | Середина |
| ZM (Zn-Al-Mg) | Zinc + Al + Mg | Very high | Cut-edge exposure, industrial | Средне-высокий |
| PPGI / PPGL | Painted | Depends on base | Architectural, colored panels | Высокий |
Cut edges are where coatings fail first. GI and ZM offer galvanic protection at the cut edge. GL does not, so the exposed steel edge needs a protective film or sealer in salt environments. The American Galvanizers Association publishes corrosion data on zinc and zinc-alloy coatings.
Coating weight is the mass of coating per square meter of steel coil, measured total both sides. It sets corrosion life more than the coating type does. Two buyers can order the same GI steel coil, and the one with double the coating weight gets a profile that lasts years longer outdoors.
EN 10346 uses grams per square meter: Z120, Z180, Z275, AZ150, ZM120. ASTM A653 uses ounces per square foot: G30 to G235. The crossover: G90 equals about Z275, G60 equals about Z180, G40 equals about Z120.
Practical ranges for roll forming steel coil:
Coating weight also changes the forming process. Thick coatings flake at tight bend radii. For a bend under 1x thickness, keep the coating at Z275 or below. The material influence on roll forming machine design page covers how coating hardness affects roller wear. The Центр GalvInfo publishes the coating weight tables behind these design rules.
Thickness controls strength, weight, and cost. It also drives the machine. Roller gap, drive power, cutoff force, and bend allowance all assume one nominal thickness.
| Приложение | Толщина | Typical grade |
|---|---|---|
| Roofing and cladding | 0.4 to 0.7 mm | DX51D / CS Type B |
| Wall panels, ceiling profiles | 0.5 to 1.0 mm | DX51D / DX52D |
Thickness tolerance matters more than steel coil buyers think. EN 10346 allows about plus or minus 0.05 mm on 0.5 mm coil and about plus or minus 0.10 mm on 2.0 mm coil. ASTM A653 runs similar bands. A 0.05 mm drift changes the bend allowance and the расчет ширины катушки, which shifts the finished profile dimensions.
Two terms come up in every quote. BMT is base metal thickness, the steel alone. TCT is total coated thickness. Always compare BMT when you buy steel coil. Coating adds 0.02 to 0.05 mm per side and throws off a TCT comparison. For more detail, see coil width and thickness calculation for roll forming.
Coil width is the flat strip width of the steel coil that feeds the machine. It is not the profile cover width. The finished profile is the strip bent, so the coil must cover every leg, web, and bend.
The formula: coil width equals developed width plus trim allowance on both edges. Developed width is the unrolled profile cross-section, including bend allowances at every corner. For a simple U-channel that is base plus two legs plus bend allowances. For a complex roof panel, use profile software or a test coil.
Trim allowance is 3 to 5 mm per side for mill-edge coil, 5 to 7 mm for slit coil, and more for pre-painted material where the slit edge can crack the paint.
Standard mill widths are 914, 1000, 1219, 1250, and 1524 mm. Few profiles use these exactly. Ordering slit-to-width steel coil from a service center typically recovers 3 to 8% yield versus trimming a standard width. Our калькулятор металлических катушек covers the yield math.
Coil weight planning follows width. A 10-ton coil of 0.5 mm x 1000 mm runs about 2,550 meters. The same tonnage in 1.0 mm x 1250 mm runs about 1,020 meters. That number decides how often your разматыватель stops for a coil change.
Surface condition is where steel coil buyers drop the ball. Mill-edge coil arrives with rounded corners and a tight width tolerance. Slit coil has sheared edges that can carry burr. Burr scratches rollers, skips in the flower pattern, and shows up as edge wave in the finished profile.
Look for three things at receiving:
If you cannot inspect at receiving, buy from a mill or service center with a certified test certificate per order. The certificate should state grade, coating, coating weight, thickness tolerance class, and coil number. Keep one certificate per steel coil.
Finally, match the coil to the machine. Check coil inside diameter against the разматывающая машина mandrel, 508 mm being standard and 610 mm common. Check coil outer diameter against mandrel travel and coil weight against the uncoiler rating. A линия продольной резки или линия поперечной резки is the right answer if you buy master coils and process them in-house.
How to select steel coil is the first question every buyer asks us. Every line we build starts with a coil spec sheet. Our engineers take the profile drawing, the target market standard, and the corrosion environment, then lock the grade, coating, coating weight, thickness, and width before the first roller is cut.
We have configured lines for DX51D roofing in Europe, S350GD purlins in the Middle East, SS Grade 50 racking in North America, and Z275 coil in Australia. Send us your profile and project location. We will return a recommended steel coil spec, a machine configuration, and a proposal that matches both.
For general roofing and cladding, DX51D (EN 10346) or CS Type B (ASTM A653). For structural profiles like purlins and strut channel, S350GD or SS Grade 50. For high-load racking, S450GD or SS Grade 80.
GI is hot-dip zinc. GL and AZ are the same coating family, roughly 55% aluminum and 43% zinc, commonly called galvalume. AZ is the EN 10346 designation for the coating that GL refers to in product names. AZ offers longer corrosion life than GI at equal coating weight.
Use the crossover: G90 equals about Z275, G60 equals about Z180, G40 equals about Z120 in grams per square meter total both sides. ASTM measures in ounces per square foot, EN in grams per square meter.
EN 10346 normal tolerance is about plus or minus 0.05 mm on 0.5 mm coil and about plus or minus 0.10 mm on 2.0 mm coil. ASTM A653 runs similar bands. Order the tighter tolerance class when the profile has precise interlock dimensions.
Add the developed width, the unrolled cross-section with bend allowances, plus trim allowance on both edges. Use 3 to 5 mm per side for mill-edge coil and 5 to 7 mm for slit coil. Use profile software or a test coil for complex sections.
BMT is base metal thickness, the steel only. TCT is total coated thickness including the coating. Compare BMT when buying steel coil, because coatings add 0.02 to 0.05 mm per side and make TCT comparisons misleading.
Steel coil typically accounts for 60 to 70% of the finished profile cost. That is why a coil spec error is the most expensive mistake in a roll forming plant and why selection deserves an engineer’s attention.
Start from the developed width of the profile and add trim. Standard mill widths, 914, 1000, 1219, and 1250 mm, rarely match exactly, so order slit-to-width steel coil and recover 3 to 8% yield versus trimming a standard width.
How to select steel coil is not a guessing game. Grade fixes strength, coating fixes life, coating weight fixes durability, thickness fixes the machine, width fixes yield, and surface condition fixes quality. Work through the six decisions in that order, on paper, before you place a coil order. The buyers who skip this process pay for it in scrap, rejects, and rust claims.
